Prof. Dr.-Inp. Eckhard Freund studierte Elektrotechnik an den Technischen Hochschulen Braunschweig und Darmstadt . 1968 promovierte er zum Dr.Ing. an der Technischen Universität Berlin. Nach einer Gastprofessur im Electrical Engineering sowie Aerospace-Department der University of Southern California und einer Professur für Automatisierungsund Informationstechnik an der FemUniversi tät Hagen ist er seit 1985 Professor für Automatisierung und Robotertechnologie und Leiter des Instituts für Roboterforschung der Universität Dor tmund.
