Vocabulary Measurement: Techniques and Major Findings

What are teachers of English? In what behaviors do they engage? Chiefly, they help children and young people develop an increasingly mature taste for excellence in literature, and they are responsible for guiding growth in language. I say "responsible." This means that they have or should have certain insights into the growth of linguistic behavior which are useful in working with children, young people, their parents, editors, publishers. It may sound presumptuous and ambitious to say that teachers of English are the guardians of general growth in linguistic power, that they are the wise counselors of force and clarity in writing and speaking. But if they are not responsible for these goals, then who is?
