Spin correlations in parton-parton scattering

Abstract The sum over the helicities of partons in QCD jet production gives rise to quantum mechanical interference effects, leading to correlations between the azimuthal angles of the branching planes of partons within jet cascades. In this paper, it is shown how to extend previous work on calculating correlations within a jet to the case of parton collisions. This requires taking into account the complete helicity amplitudes for the scattering of the partons and the possibility of initial- as well as final-state bremsstrahlung. This introduces classically acausal, quantum correlations between the azimuthal angles in separate jets, which can be very large in particular cases.
