Vigour and pattern in taxonomy.

SUMMARY: A method is described for calculating taxonomic relationships based on qualitative characters so as to reduce dissimilarity that is due principally to differences between the strains in growth rate (or other similar factors). By this the total difference is partitioned into two components, ‘Vigour Difference’ and ‘Pattern Difference’, which are analogous to Size and Shape Differences in higher organisms. Pattern Difference is the one of most interest in taxonomy. The concept of ‘Vigour’ is discussed, and it can be applied to factors such as different growth temperatures and times of reading tests, as well as to differential growth rates.
