Second order strains and instability of thin walled bars of open cross-section

Abstract Complete expressions for the strains, including second order terms, occurring in thin walled bars of open cross-section are derived. Shear deformation due to non-uniform bending and distortion of the cross-section are not considered in the present theory. The correctness of the expressions is verified by incorporating them in a general instability analysis based on energy considerations.
