Urine concentration in the rat during acute and prolonged dehydration

No relation has been found between the enhanced excretion of antidiuretic hormone and the increased urinary concentration, in thirsting animals (Dicker & Nunn, 1957). The antidiuretic hormone increases the permeability of the tubules to water, thus allowing solute-free water from the glomerular filtrate to diffuse back into the blood (Wirz, 1956). According to Smith (1956), the elaboration of an osmotically concentrated urine is, however, independent of the action of the antidiuretic hormone. The present investigation has been concerned with the elucidation of the mechanism by which the kidneys elaborate a urine osmotically more concentrated than the plasma during antidiuresis produced by vasopressin or by prolonged water deprivation.
