Building Wiring - Case Study

To prevent interference to data transmission, data wiring must be run separately from mains wiring. EN 50174-2:2000 gives installation requirements for the separations required. In practice it can be difficult to achieve the mandated separations. This case study describes measurements made of compliant and non-compliant wiring over a 30kHz to 20MHz frequency range. On the basis of the measurements made of the compliant wiring it was found it was possible to recognise non- compliant wiring by measurement. Once it was possible to clearly distinguish between non- compliant and compliant wiring, remedial measures were made to bring the non-compliant wiring into compliance. The remedial measures will be described.
