SPEED MEASUREMENT AND THE EVALUATION OF ACCIDENT-RELEVANT DATA FOR RIDERS OF 2-WHEELED VEHICLES USING A QUESTIONING PROCESS CARRIED OUT ON A RANDOM BASIS

An analysis of the accident circumstances of 2 wheeled vehicle riders provides starting points for measures to reduce accident frequency and to lessen the consequences of accidents. However it is only possible to obtain a convincing assertation on the accident-relevant behaviour of 2 wheeled vehicle riders if a simultaneous observation of all those not involved in the accident is carried out. In this connection a research team from the accident-surgery clinic of the Hanover Medical College in co-operation with the Hanover Police, measured speeds of motorcycles, motorised cycles, mopeds and bicycles within a 2-week period using radar equipment. From a detailed questioning process which followed, the most important data were obtained. The investigation shows the speed spectrum of single 2 wheeled vehicles and characteristic situations involving vehicle and drivers. (TRRL)
