Basic concepts of fiber optic subscriber loop operation systems

The authors present an overview of a flexible network architecture for fiber-optic subscriber loops, and review the basic environment for centralized and automated network operation. A surveillance and test system for the optical fiber network is also described. The system makes it possible to access fibers remotely and isolate failures promptly when they occur. It also automatically measures fiber loss on a regularly scheduled basis while fibers are in service. This gives a clear picture of fiber loss degradation.<<ETX>>
