Human Issues in New Manufacturing Technology

Abstract Two technologies – computer-based processes and telecommunications – will provide the major impetus for manufacturing change in the coming decade. Because of their widespread applicability, the human impacts of these technologies will be felt throughout industrialized societies. The issues raised by technological displacement, skills changes and changes in the nature of work require the attention of managers, technologists, workers and public policymakers to solve problems that threaten to slow the acceptance of these technologies. Of particular importance will be the creation of a receptive attitude toward change through policies that assure personal employment security. Alternative policies are discussed, and ways that the technologies themselves can aid in ameliorating the problems is described.
