An efficient communication system for disaster detection and coordinated emergency evacuation

Speedily and safely evacuating the occupants of a disaster area is becoming increasingly important. Its indispensability is being further emphasized by the recurrence of events like terrorist threats, natural disasters and man-made disasters. Experiences from previous evacuation operations have proven that the proper, timely, and reliable communication with the evacuees is instrumental in executing a successful and satisfactory evacuation. Furthermore, conditions in an emergency situation are altogether different from normal circumstances, which can render the regular communication mechanisms completely unavailable in facilitating evacuation operations. However, the communication aspects of the evacuation procedures have not been touched in detail. In this paper, we propose a novel communication system for evacuation operation and three scenarios to efficiently reach out to evacuees in the case of emergencies.
