TDMA communication for SS/TDMA satellites with optical intersatellite links

A novel approach for the optimal time slot assignment problem for two SS/TDMA (satellite-switched time division multiple access) satellites interconnected through WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) optical intersatellite links is presented. The protocol principle is time slot allocation of transmissions to earth zones while minimizing the transmission duration. The allocation algorithm accounts for the following factors: (1) each satellite covers an arbitrary number of nondisjoint zones, (2) no onboard buffering at the satellites, (3) parallel intersatellite links obtained by WDM, and (4) the intersatellite link delay. An analogy between the introduced system and the modified openshop scheduling problem is presented. In addition, a heuristic algorithm for the modified openshop problem is presented and compared with an optimal branch-and-bound algorithm.<<ETX>>
