Single Dose and Intermittent Griseofulvin Regimens in the Treatment of Tinea Capitis in Kenya/Einmalbehandlung und intermittierende Therapiestrategien bei der Griseofulvin‐Behandlung der Tinea capitis in Kenya

Summary: 3788 pupils were screened for tinea capitis of whom 363 (9.6%) were found to be infected. 254 (70%) completed a trial of single dose and intermittent griseofulvin treatment regimens. The regimens were found to be very cost effective. A single griseofulvin dose of 2–3 g gave a cure rate of 58.6%. The cost of treatment is 7% the cost of the currently used daily griseofulvin regimen whose efficacy was found to be 67.8%. Repeating the dose after four weeks increased the cure rate to 79.1% and the cost to 14% of the cost of the currently used regimen. Giving a further dose after eight weeks increased the cure rate to 91.2% whilst increasing the treatment cost to only 21%.
