Problems in the detection and identification of significant roadway conditions

To respond effectively to significant roadway conditions, drivers must make timely and accurate detections and identifications. Detection and identification are different processes, and neither is necessarily simple or automatic. This paper discusses both processes; it points out problems with each, and suggests means for improvement.
