A review of vehicle noise studies carried out at the institute of sound and vibration research with a reference to some recent research on petrol engine noise

For the past several years at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, the problem of commercial vehicle noise has been studied, with particular attention to the diesel engine as a noise source. This paper describes the results of complementary investigations concerning the behaviour of vehicles in their real environment and the means of controlling vehicle noise. Recent studies of petrol engine noise and its marked dissimilarity to that produced by diesel engines are also described. The relationships between then vehicle noise sources and their contributions to the interior and exteriorienvironment are discussed, and some effects of road planning and vehicle operation are evaluated.
