Line and shunt switching to alleviate overloads and voltage violations in power networks

The paper presents an algorithm to alleviate power system emergency conditions by network topology rescheduling. The technique, based on sensitivity analysis, makes use of some practical simplifications. The switching of shunt elements is determined from the changes on the reactive power injections that are necessary to alleviate voltage violations. A relieving line switching sequence is determined by selecting and ranking possible switchable branches according to effectiveness in alleviating overloads and/or voltage violations. The algorithm has been simulated on 24- and 118-busbar systems.
