Abstract A conjecture by Scheinok (1972) that the use of Bahadur's distribution in Scheinok's proposed method for diagnosing diseases from observed symptoms gives particularly simple algebraic results, is proved. It is also shown that this proposed method is of doubtful utility, but a modified approach, which should be of practical value, is suggested.
