Estimating the common mean direction of several circular or spherical distributions with differing dispersions

SUMMARY This paper considers the problem of forming a pooled estimate of the common mean direction of several circular or spherical populations with possibly differing dispersions, based on samples from each population. Methods for obtaining approximate confidence cones for the mean direction of a single circular or spherical population are developed, then applied to the case of several samples.
