Intensity noise of large area vertical cavity surface emitting lasers in multimode optical fibre links

The authors report the measurement of the relative intensity noise (RIN) of large area vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) in a multimode fibre link. It is found that the RIN of the large area VCSELs under modulation is < −120 dBMz below a frequency ofl GHz and that reflection noise is significantly reduced with modulation.
