MAKING THE GRADE AT CUESTA

Since the fall of 1999, a problematic stretch of highway known as Cuesta Grade, located north of San Luis Obispo, California, has been undergoing a $46 million improvement plan. This article describes the various efforts that are being made in upgrading the road, whose heavy traffic, steep incline, soil instability, and narrow lanes have made it a treacherous road inhospitable to vehicles and bicyclists.
