Rotor designs for small inverter-dedicated induction machines

Alternative performance criteria governing steady state operation of an induction motor are applied to design an 'inverter-dedicated" induction machine. The design is focused on the rotor, especially on the rotor slot shape and the bar material. A Monte Carlo approach is used for optimization of the slot geometry. As a result, a wide variety of different slot shapes are explored. Performance calculations are done in a finite element environment, using a simplified model of the machine. A new "optimal" slot design is presented, along with simulation results. It is shown that the performance is insensitive to small changes in the slot shape, as long as the cross section remains constant. The bar material has a small influence on the slot shape.
