WAVE ATTENUATION AND INTERNAL FRICTION AS FUNCTIONS OF FREQUENCY IN ROCKS

Published and unpublished data on attenuation and internal friction in rocks are calculated and plotted against frequency in the range 10-3 to 108 cps. It is shown that for 10-3<f<1(R‐wave)α=5×10-7fdb/cm 1<f<108(P‐wave)α=10-5f0.9db/cm 10-3<f<108(P+R)α=2×10-6fdb/cm 10-3<f<107(P,S,R,L,)Q¯=213. The assumptions and limitations in the data analysis are outlined in the text.
