Safety benefits of advance stop lines at signalized intersections: Results of a field evaluation

Moving stop lines farther back from crosswalks may reduce the risk of pedestrian crashes. Advance stop lines increase the distance motorists stopped before the crosswalks and reduced motor vehicle/pedestrian conflicts at crosswalks that transverse multi-lane roads. They also reduce the risk of right-angle collisions caused by red light running by increasing the elapsed time for lead vehicles to enter the intersections after onset of the green signal. A study was conducted to investigate driver compliance with advance stop lines at signalized intersections and the potential safety benefits resulting from their use. Language: en
