Stochastic theory of settlement of loose cohesionless soils

The response of loose cohesionless soils to surface applied loads is investigated from the viewpoint of the probabilistic mechanics of particulate media. A model is proposed that is based on the combination of the diffusion of intergranular forces and an excess volume of voids. In this regard, it provides a bridge between theories developed independently for the diffusion of stresses and for the propagation of settlements. In its general formulation, the theory can model three-dimensional, transient effects. However, the model is believed to be limited to normally consolidated, fully drained or dry, soils which do not exhibit dilatancy effects. The modelling of the steady state deflexion pattern under a rigid strip footing was found to be in good agreement with observed settlements in laboratory model tests using uncompacted silt, provided the applied load did not approach the bearing capacity of the soil. La reaction des sols lâches, non-coherents, a des charges appliquees en surface, est etudiee du poin...
