A series compensator with fault current limiting function

A method to control a power converter-based series compensator (SC) such that it can also function as a fault current limiter (FCL) is described. The SC achieves the current limiting function through the magnitude and phase control of its injection voltage. By such action, it is shown that the FCL will absorb energy from the external network. The consequence is an increase in the voltage across the terminals of the SC energy storage system. A method to size the storage system is then described. By incorporating the energy storage system with the proposed control scheme to realize the injection voltage, it is seen that the FCL is also effective in improving the supply quality of the power system.
