This report is the result of the master thesis that during the autumn 2006 was madeat Scania. The purpose was to investigate if it’s possible to move the starter lock. Thestarter lock of today is placed beneath the steering wheel and limits the space for thedrivers’ knees and legs. The place is also unsuitable in case of an accident, becausethe driver can injure his knees and legs. Today an ordinary key I used to identifycorrect user.To get a look at the market today a benchmarking was made on trucks and cars. Atthe benchmarking we saw that many passengers’ cars have got new starter locksand electric steering locks. More exclusive cars can be equipped with moreadvanced systems as keyless go for an extra charge.The master thesis got two directions, the laws and the identifications of user. To fulfilthe legal requirements we have to use either a steering lock, gearshift controller lockor to lock the whole transmission. After that we had studied all possible options weconclude that an electric steering lock is the best choice. To lock the transmission isexpensive and complicated. The gear shift control is an option but with three types ofgearboxes it’s more advanced than the steering lock that is identical at all vehicles.Today Scania offers a gear shift control system called Opticruise that has nomechanical connection with the gearbox. We have a suggestion that we could lock itonly with software. To separate the steering lock from the starter lock demands thatwe have a safe communication between them. The immobilizer that we offer tocustomers today could be a solution that ensures that we have safe communication.A key with immobilizer and remote controlled central locking makes the metal keysuperfluous. Because of that we have a suggestion of a new starting lock where thekey becomes a remote control and key as one. The vehicle will be started in a newlocking device with a new pattern.A analyse of the costs has been made and after that we saw that it wouldn’t costmuch more to use the new system compared to today’s system. With an electronicstarting lock and electric steering lock we could create much more opportunities thantoday. We could offer system like keyless go to our customers.To test the new system a prototype was build and placed in a truck where it wastested during a month. The result was to full satisfaction.
