Study on Structural Reliability of a Bulk Carrier with Double Hull Board Side

Taking a bulk carrier for example, the ultimate bending moment and the maximum shearing stress of the carrier in two structural forms (single-hull and double-hull board side) are first calculated using the combined load moment determined by stochastic process, and then their reliabilities are assessed. The results indicate that if introducing the double-hull board side structure, the shearing stress will be greatly decreased, while the effects on improving longitudinal strength are not remarkable. In the end the effects on the ultimate bending moment and the maximum shearing stress with different width of double side skin are analyzed, and the proposal of selecting the width of double side skin is put forward.
