A Review of IC Engine Models for Control System Design

Abstract Many advances in engine modelling have been made over the last 15 years. This paper attempts to review the significant advances in the field and to relate the different types of models to their relevance for engine control design. Improving the state-of-the-art in engine modeling has enabled better control of engines in many ways. Models have been developed for optimization of the steady state engine control calibrations as well as for dynamic corrections to the calibrations. The models have made possible better analysis of engine/vehicle performance and in many cases have contributed to design improvements in subsystems whose functions were previously not fully understood.
