HANDLING THE EXCEPTIONS: DEPENDABILITY OF SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURAL ROBUSTNESS

In this paper the role of structural dependability is exploited with reference to the design process of complex structural systems. A comprehensive array of definitions is given and the role played by dependability in structural engineering is discussed, on the premise that there are strong connections between how one frames a problem and what is then searched and solved. In the second part of the paper it is shown how the delineated theoretical framework for dependability assessment forms the basis for the design and the definition of the performances levels for a long span suspension bridge of unique characteristics.
