Diffusion in intermetallic compounds.

Recent studies on self-diffusion and interdiffusion in various types of intermetallic compounds are reviewed. Diffusion mechanisms in B2-type compounds are discussed, which are related with the diffusivity ratio and the ordering energy of the constituent elements. The measurement for a Ni3Ge compound suggests that higher diffusivity for the major element is a general trend in Ll2-type compounds which is consistent with the expectation based on the geometrical arrangement of Ni and Ge in Ni3Ge. Single-phase interdiffusion experiments are the most suitable to determine the interdiffusivity, which is much different from the data from multiphase reaction diffusion experiments; the latter involves extrinsic effects such as grain boundary diffusion. The interdiffusion in TiAl, Ti3Al and CoTi compounds is discussed with the self-diffusivities in terms of the Darken relation.
