Artificial intelligence approaches for supervision and alarm interpretation in industrial environments

This paper discusses the potential benefits of artificial intelligence techniques. First, the role of alarm interpretation in complex process monitoring is examined followed by an analysis of the alarm interpretation task. The techniques used in several industrial applications are described. They are compared and the common features are highlighted. This paper has been written so as to provide the adequate introductory material to the ECC'99 invited session on Artificial Intelligence for Industrial Process Supervision.
