Intelligent Machining of Components from Optimised CAD Models

A technique for automatically generating NC machine programs from CAD images of a rough work piece and an optimally positioned component was presented. The technique was particularly suited to batch machining applications - the machining of multiple instances of identical components. A comparison of the generative and variant methods of automatic machine program development was made with emphasis on their suitability to batch machining applications. A technique based on the variant method was formulated, where a reference machine program was transformed to machine each instance of the optimised component. Finally, the transformed machine program was examined to detect and correct catastrophic errors and remove redundant cutter motions.
