REAL-TIME PASSENGER INFORMATION FOR TRANSIT SYSTEMS: PROPOSALS FOR THE JUBILEE LINE EXTENSION

The planning for the extension to the Jubilee Line has created an opportunity to review the information provided on the Underground, and the means by which the information is conveyed to and presented to passengers. It is anticipated that the results of this review will be applied throughout the Underground. Much recent work has been based on existing market research (more is underway), with the objective of determining what passengers need to know, and when and where passengers need to have that information available. Disruptions to services (when the Underground has often been least able to respond to passengers' information enquiries), safety and quality, the demand for clarity, consistency and comprehensiveness, and new technological capabilities have all contributed to the increased expectations and requirements for information. The paper covers the information currently provided, the analysis of that information, passenger information requirements and the identification of omissions and inadequacies, the design, utilisation and technologies of real-time displays and PA announcements, and an outline of a passenger information strategy.
