Analysis and modelling of the erbium-ytterbium glass laser

Abstract A simplified model of the cw operated erbium-ytterbium laser, based on a rate equation analysis, is presented. The model takes into account the spatial variations of both the pump beam and the cavity field, and generally requires numerical solutions. Approximate analytical solutions for the threshold power and the slope efficiency have also been derived. A few numerical plots have been generated and may be used as guidelines to design the laser. Following the design criteria outlined, a miniaturized Er:Yb:phosphate glass laser for optical communications has been constructed and optimized.
