NAILS AND FUNGI

Himian nails support a surprisingly varied fungal fiora, including not only dermatophytes and yeasts, but many mould species both common and uncommon. These infections are known by two names, onychomycosis and tinea unguium. Onychomycosis literally means 'fungus infecdon of the nail', while 'tinea' is an ancient word for 'ringworm'. I propose, here, to use 'onychomycosis' to include nail infections attributable to any fungus, and to confine 'dnea unguium' to dermatophyte infections only.
