Chapter 6 Encoding and maintenance of information in visual working memory

Publisher Summary The Working Memory (WM) model has proved a profitable way to conceptualize the short-term storage of information. The model involves the development of a number of modality-specific systems, often referred to as “slave systems”, capable of dealing with modality-specific information and that are controlled by an amodal Central Executive (CE) system. This chapter gives an overview of some of the research into visual memory within the Working Memory framework. It also aims to illustrate the techniques that are being developed that will enable further elucidation of the phenomenon. Both the Brooks' task and the technique of passive movement are used in the empirical report that is concerned with a single and very straightforward problem.
