40 MHz Ultrasound Diagnostic System for Dermatologic Examination

An ultrasound diagnostic system operating at 40 MHz has been developed for examination of skin diseases. Its transducer consists of a fused quartz rod acoustic lens and a LiNb03 36 rotated Ycut plate bonded to the acoustic lens. The 6 dB two-way lateral acoustic beam width at the focal plane was 0.1 mm which is close to the calculated value. The inspection region is about 12 mm wide and 4 mm deep. Clinical dermatologic examinations proved the usefulness of this system for diagnosis of such diseases as malignant melanoma, seborrheic keratosis, and neurof ibroma.
