Reducing the Loss of Life of Distribution Transformers Affected by Plug-In Electric Vehicles Using Electric Water Heaters

the increased deployment of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), and their associated charging infrastructure, can adversely affect distribution transformers lifetime. In this work we investigate the use of domestic electric water heaters (EWH), located at residential houses, to reduce such adverse effects. A control scheme is proposed to adjust the EWHs thermostat setpoints to manage their power consumption patterns and in turn their upstream distribution transformers power usage profiles. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme has been validated using a simulation model developed in MATLAB environment. The results reveal the potential application of the proposed scheme in reducing the impact of PEV charging infrastructure on distribution transformer aging, while meeting the EWHs hot water demand requirements.
