The evolution of optical networks: the value of transparency and ultra-long reach

Summary form only given. The promise of removing the "non-value added" equipment from optical networks still beckons. For network providers to benefit from the promise, and for system vendors to thrive providing these systems, the issues of economics and functionality need to be addressed. The reach of a system must be extended without concomitant increase in the cost of amplification. Optical network functionality that does not use optoelectronic conversion must still monitor performance and provide sophisticated fault location. Creative means to accomplish these tasks are being pursued in many companies, and industry groups are working on issues of interoperability. The extent to which the vision of optical networks is realized depends on the success of these efforts.
