Pemphigus and Pemphigoid in Dogs, Cats, and Horses

Pemphigus (from the Greek "blister") and pemphigoid (from the Greek "resembling pemphigus") have been recognized in humans for many years. These disorders are of presumed autoimmune origin, but their exact pathogenesis remains elusive. Reports on pemphigus and pemphigoid in domestic animals are of much more recent vintage. In the dog, pemphigus vulgaris was first reported in 1975,2.16 pemphigus vegetans in 1977.9 pemphigus foliaceus in 1977,' bullous pemphigoid in 1978,4 and pemphigus erythematosus in I 980.'0.'' In the cat, pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus foliaceus, and pemphigus erythematosus were reported in I 980.'0.'2 Equine pemphigus foliaceus and equine bullous pemphigoid were reported in 1981 .3.6.7
