La eficiencia técnica en la industria de agua latinoamericana medida a través de la función de distancia

El servicio publico de agua ha venido siendo objeto de estudio en los ultimos anos motivado a diferentes razones. El agua es administrada por diversas organizaciones que van desde el sector publico (administracion local, regional o nacional) al privado (abarcando todo el proceso o parte de ellos), asi como organizaciones comunitarias, cooperativas, unidades operativas, entre otras; y pueden prestar tanto el servicio de agua potable como el de aguas residuales o alcantarillado. En Latinoamerica esta industria posee caracteristicas particulares influidas por el bajo desarrollo en los paises; por lo que se plantea medir la eficiencia tecnica de las empresas de agua en latinoamericanas para el periodo 2003-2006. Utilizando una funcion de distancia se elaboraron tres modelos; de ellos se desprende una alta incidencia del tamano de la poblacion atendida. Los resultados sirven para llamar la atencion a las empresas, gobierno, agentes reguladores e investigadores, sobre los aspectos que inciden en la eficiencia y la busqueda de una mejor calidad de vida.
