Conventional Pollutant Impacts on Receiving Waters

In recent years increasing concern has been devoted to urban runoff pollutant impacts on receiving waters. The following are among the most important reasons for this concern: Urban areas make up an important part of man’s environment today. Furthermore, an increasing degree of urbanization and activities in connection with this are characteristic features of changes going on in societies all over the world. Therefore, the pollutants discharged with the runoff water from urban areas are an important factor in the contamination of the receiving waters and are supposed to remain so in the future. Increasing control of discharges from point sources like municipal sewage treatment plants and industrial waste outlets has increased the relative importance of the urban wet weather sources.
