Perception of the range of a sound source of unknown strength.

The range of a sound source of unknown strength can be calculated from measured interaural differences in the time of arrival and intensity of a brief sound. The possibility that the brain performs this calculation is discussed, and an experiment to determine human range perception is proposed.
