The glass gene encodes a zinc-finger protein required by Drosophila photoreceptor cells

Null mutations of glass specifically remove photo-receptor cells, leaving other cell types intact. We have isolated the glass gene and have shown that its transcript encodes a putative protein of 604 amino acids with five zinc-fingers. The glass product may be a transcription factor required for the development of a single neuronal cell type.
