POTENTIOMETRIC TITRATIONS INVOLVING SOLUTIONS OF METALS IN LIQUID AMMONIA

A relatively simple apparatus for use in potentiometric titrations in which the titrating reagents consist of solutions of alkali metals (or alkaline earth metals) in liquid ammonia at -38~ is described, together with complete procedural and operational details. The utility of these methods has been demonstrated in the study of the formation of polyanionic salts by reactions between polysulfides of sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium in liquid ammonia and liquid ammonia solutions of the corresponding metals.
