Circulation retrieval of wake vortex with a side-looking scanning Lidar

Circulation is a very essential parameter to assess the intensity of a wake vortex, and there is a great demand of real time retrieval of wake vortex circulation in aviation safety and related area. In this paper, by taking into account the weak inertia of aerosols inside the wake, we present a new algorithm to retrieval the circulation of wake vortex in clear air with an up/down-ward scanning Lidar, where the circulation is boiled down to the solution of a simple system of linear equations. Application of the algorithm on measurement data from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) verifies the good performance of the algorithm.
