Destination Management Systems (DMS): A Reality Check in the Greek Tourism Industry

Despite the importance of DMS on the competitiveness of small and medium tourism enterprises (SMTEs), SMTEs’ representation in DMS has been low and problematic. Previous studies have primarily focused on examining DMS adoption from a SMETs’ perspective, while being interorganisational systems, DMS’s stakeholders may have conflicting and different interests. This study adopts a multi-stakeholders’ approach for investigating the factors influencing DMS adoption and operation in the Greek tourism industry. Data were collected from a nation-wide survey targeting all tourism stakeholders and investigating their perceptions about the development, adoption, organisational structure and performance evaluation of DMS. The findings confirmed some conflicting perceptions between private and public organisations, while their practical and theoretical implications are also discussed.
