Medium Access Control with SDMA for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

In this paper, an SDMA-based MAC protocol (S-MAC) for wireless ad hoc networks with smart antennas based on IEEE 802.11 is proposed. The proposed protocol exploits the space division multiple access (SDMA) system to allow reception of more than one packet from spatially separated transmitters. Using SDMA technology provides collision-free access to the communication medium based on the location of a node. In wireless ad hoc networks, the SDMA system has several advantages over other wireless multiple access schemes. The proposed protocol solves the hidden terminal problem, the exposed terminal problem, and the hidden terminal problem due to asymmetry in gain. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme outperforms the previous schemes.
