Statistical Process Control

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is the use of statistical problem solving measures to improve the quality of products or processes. The word statistical implies the collection, representation and interpretation of data using statistical methods such as control charts. Process refers to any sequence of operations which continuously utilises machines, methods, materials and manpower. Control implies taking care of the process by measuring and correcting its performance [Owen, 1989; Schilling, 1990]. This chapter gives an overview of SPC and control charting. The chapter describes XPC, an expert system for statistical process control. Finally, it discusses the selection of control chart types and reviews the use of intelligent advisor programs for control chart selection.
