CDMA technology: present status and future prospects

Cellular services by digital systems such as cdmaOne (IS-95 based CDMA systems) and GSM have been rapidly replacing the analog service with the advantages of their excellent quality and salient features of services as well as in capacity. CDMA technologies have been widely accepted and applied for high rate data transmission up to 2 Mb/s which is a great concern in IMT-2000 and extended for mobile multimedia communications. Wideband CDMA schemes have been proposed as candidate radio transmission technologies for third generation mobile communication systems. In this paper, CDMA technology successfully applied for mobile communication is discussed and its current status for digital cellular and PCS, with extensions to third generation mobile communication systems, is described.
